UMARC members have recently recieved seed grants to focus research on neurodiversity and AI. These grants are from the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary at Maryland (AIM), which offers opportunities to use AI technology for innovation and experimental learning to support the public.

AI-Driven Development of Neurodiversity Affirming Practices for Teachers and Clinicians (ADAPT)

Veronica Kang, José Ortiz, and Heather Yarger are collaborating with Kate Lu and Ariel La to train UMD students to use TerpAI chatbot in conjunction with ADAPT. The project will support emotion regulation, communication, and social skills for culturally diverse autistic youth in Maryland and Virginia.

Participatory Design of AI Tools for Neurodiversity-Affirming Speech Therapy

Shevaun Lewis and Kathy Dow-Burger are creating a new framework to help speech-language therapists and their clients set goals in real conversation data. Their work will involve autistic adults and speech0language therapists in designing AI tools to analyze everyday conversations.
